Canada Post pleased that employees vote in favour of collective agreements
OTTAWA, Dec. 20, 2012 /CNW/ - Canada Post is pleased that employees represented by the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) have ratified the tentative agreements that were negotiated in October with their bargaining agent.
The new collective agreements will take effect on December 21, 2012, both for urban employees and for Rural and Suburban Mail Carriers (RSMCs, who are also represented by CUPW). The agreements are in effect until 2016.
Canada Post and its employees must now sharpen their focus to work together to address the enormous challenge facing the postal service: rapidly declining volumes in Transaction Mail (bills, invoices, notices and statements). This is occurring as businesses, governments and Canadian consumers make a historic and irreversible shift to digital communications.
Given the scale and speed of that technological shift, Canada Post's challenges are greater than any new collective agreement could address. Canada Post will continue the urgent task of transforming its business to adapt to the dramatically changing needs of Canadians.
Background
The operations of the Canada Post Group of Companies are funded by the
revenue generated by the sale of its products and services, not
taxpayer dollars. Canada Post has a mandate from the Government of
Canada to remain financially self-sufficient and to provide a standard
of postal service that is affordable and meets the needs of the people
of Canada.
