The National Energy Conservation Awards are bestowed by the government of India through the Ministry of Power and Bureau of Energy Efficiency to recognize manufacturers that have achieved excellence in energy conservation. In the "Consumer Goods Manufacturing Sector," Carrier has won the National Energy Conservation Award for three consecutive years, with a citation of "Top Rank" in 2009. Carrier also won first prize in the "Manufacturers of BEE Star Labeled Appliances (air conditioner) Sector" that was newly created in 2009, taking into consideration the energy savings achieved through the sale of energy efficient appliances over a two-year period.
"We are truly honored that Carrier's environmental leadership is being recognized with such prestigious awards," said Zubin Irani, managing director, Carrier India, who accepted the award from Sushilkumar Shinde, union minister of power, government of India, during a ceremony held on National Energy Conservation Day (December 14, 2009).
Carrier was one of the first consumer goods companies in India to launch star-rated energy efficient air conditioners. In 2008, over 80 percent of Carrier India products were BEE labeled. In addition, the Indian Green Building Council web site lists 52 LEED Rated Green Buildings in India, of which 33% have Carrier air conditioning. Internally, Carrier India's manufacturing facility in Gurgaon has achieved a reduction of 85 percent in air emissions (1999 - 2008), 84 percent in energy consumption (1997- 2008, normalized for sales) and 68 percent in water consumption (1997 - 2008). Extending its environmental commitment beyond the company, Carrier was the first founding member of the India Green Building Council and is the only company in the world to be a founding member of the U.S., China, and India Green Building Councils.
"Carrier believes that industry leadership demands environmental leadership, with sustainability integrated into our company culture. We extend our influence across the value chain to promote environmental stewardship in our factories, products and suppliers," added Irani.
"Carrier's remarkable achievements in India continue our two-decade leadership in sustainable products and operations," said John Mandyck, Carrier's vice president for sustainability and environmental strategies. "We are proud to contribute to India's sustainable development."
