Celebrities Team Up With Cancer Patients for Fund-Raising Torch Relay in Long Beach
Media Invited Saturday, June 9, 9 a.m. - noon
LONG BEACH, Calif., June 6 /PRNewswire/ -- What: More than 50 celebrities staring in children's television shows and movies (see attached) will join 200 children with cancer, sickle cell disease and other serious blood disorders on Saturday, June 9, as they run, walk, wheel or are carried in a relay, passing an Olympic-style torch to raise funds for the Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center at Miller Children's Hospital in Long Beach. When Saturday, June 9 8 - 9 a.m. registration 9 - 11 a.m. Torch Run 11:30 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. Torch Run ends and carnival games begin Visuals: -- High-fives and cheers of elation as patients and sponsors pass the torch -- Multiple relay runners circling the grassy hill at the center of Rainbow Harbor Esplanade -- Patients receiving a medal after completing each lap -- Interviews with celebrities, patients and their families Background: For more than 21 years, celebrities have joined kids with cancer in a relay featuring an Olympic-style torch. All children who participate in the relay are given a medal as they complete their laps. What makes this race unique from other walks is that sponsors do more than write a check-they get to walk or run in a group with their sponsored patient making every step personal. Why: The Torch Run is a way for patients to celebrate another year won in the fight against cancer/blood disorders and for families to remember loved ones lost. Among this group is Christine Cameron whose daughter Hannah was diagnosed with acute lymphoblastic leukemia at Miller Children's Hospital when she was only 6 years old. She decided to participate in the Torch Run that year and has not stopped passing the baton since. Hannah-now 15 years old-and her family and friends have raced their way through Rainbow Harbor for nine years. Since Hannah was diagnosed, Christine has taken a personal stake in Jonathan Jaques Children's Cancer Center at Miller Children's. When she is not teaching and helping at risk teenagers earn their diplomas she is volunteering at Jonathan Jaques, which earned her the distinction of Courage Honoree at this year's Torch Run. Where: The 22nd annual Champions Run for Life event, known as the "Torch Run," will take place at the Long Beach Rainbow Harbor Esplanade (adjacent to the Aquarium of the Pacific). 2007 Miller Children's Torch Run Celebrities As of June 1, 2007 Myles Jeffrey - 11:11, The Ant Bully Angus T.
