CHICAGO, Aug. 12, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- This week, Erica Montelo is being honored by the National Multiple Sclerosis (MS) Society as the 100,000th participant (or "mucker") at MuckFest MS, the fun mud & obstacle 5K event series where all fundraising proceeds benefit the National MS Society. Learn more about MuckFest MS events that take place in eleven cities throughout the U.S. at www.MuckFestMS.com.
At MuckFest MS, teams of runners slog through mud and overcome outrageous obstacles that spin, swing, and fling them up, down, and sideways. There's no special training required, so the event attracts people of all ages and widely varying skills and abilities from all walks of life.
Erica decided to take on the MuckFest MS challenge to support her sister Kelly, who was diagnosed with progressive multiple sclerosis five years ago. Her family has been very supportive of Kelly and have all participated in Walk MS together. But Erica wanted to do even more to help, so for the past two years she has committed to participating in MuckFest MS. This year, she will be participating along with more than 2,500 other muckers in MuckFest MS Chicago on Saturday, August 29.
"My sister means the world to me, and getting all mucky and muddy to help raise money for the National MS Society is the least I can do," Erica said. She participates in the MuckFest MS Chicago event with her coworkers at Microsoft. Last year, Erica organized and led a 30-person team that helped raise nearly $20,000 for the local chapter of the National MS Society.
"The dedication of MuckFest MS participants, like Erica, really does have a huge impact locally, throughout the Chicago area and across Illinois. MuckFest MS participants have raised nearly $1 million that helps us here at home fund critical MS research, programs and services," said Holly Messick, president of the Greater Illinois Chapter of the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. In total, MuckFest MS has raised more than $20 million nationally through the series of MuckFest MS events.
"Erica is only one of 100,000 participants that need to be honored and thanked. They do so much more than just run in the mud and raise money. The thousands of MuckFest MS participants also bring much needed visibility and awareness to a cause that is often overlooked," said Jim Hennessey, Director of Consumer Marketing at Event 360, the event's producer.
Upcoming MuckFest MS events take place in St. Louis (August 15), Chicago (August 29), Twin Cities (September 19), San Francisco (October 10), Los Angeles (October 24) and Houston (November 14). Earlier this year, events took place in Boston, Denver, Philadelphia, New Jersey and Detroit.
