Chinatown Business Improvement District Launches 10-Year Revitalization Effort With Chinatown Art Festival
Top California Artists to Preview New Artwork of Chinatown at Press Briefing
WHAT: To mark the establishment of a 10-year Business Improvement
District to revitalize this historic area of Los Angeles, the
Los Angeles Chinatown Business Council will host a press
briefing to provide details about the upcoming Chinatown Art
Festival. This month-long celebration of Chinatown's rich
63-year history will kick-off the BID's summer event schedule
that includes an outdoor Chinese film festival, Asian-inspired
fashion show and a variety of other cultural activities and
entertainment. The Chinatown Art Festival will feature "plein
air" paintings of Chinatown created by some of the state's
foremost artists, all members of the California Art Club. These
artists are currently painting in Chinatown, and a selection of
paintings will be exhibited at 951 North Broadway beginning
June 23. Accompanying the paintings will be an exhibition of
the history of both Chinatown and Asian-Americans in California,
curated by the Chinese American Museum.
WHO: The LACBC and the California Art Club, one of the nation's
largest fine arts organization, are co-sponsoring the Chinatown
Art Festival. Key members of both organizations will be in
attendance at the press briefing, as well as participating
artists who will preview some of their new paintings of
Chinatown.
WHY: It is hoped that the Art Festival paintings and the summer
events will give Southern Californians renewed interest and a
different perspective on this multicultural jewel of Los
Angeles, which has suffered from neglect during the past two
decades.
