City of Berwyn Will Open Municipal Parking Facility in Depot District

BERWYN, Ill., Nov. 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ --The Berwyn Development Corporation (BDC) is pleased to announce the Grand Opening of the City of Berwyn's Municipal Parking Facility on November 30, 2009. A ribbon cutting is scheduled for December 7, 2009 at 11:30 a.m. at 3320 Grove Avenue in the Depot District. City, state and federal officials that helped bring the project to fruition will be on hand to celebrate the beginning of the facility's operations.

Construction of the parking structure began in December 2008. The structure will provide relief to Metra's commuters as well as Depot District retail, restaurant, and service business customers. The structure features 378 parking spaces, with 300 reserved for commuters and the remainder reserved for patrons of local businesses. The mixed-use building also has approximately 15,000 square feet of retail space on the ground level. The retail component will start leasing and tenant build-out in early 2010. The structure will provide covered parking for commuters along with a short walk to the City's main train station at Oak Park Avenue. Resident Alderman Nona Chapman stated, "It has been a project in the pipeline for a long time but once construction started, we were able to deliver on time and under budget." She added, "The deck is a great building block for the Depot District as we continually look to enhance the corridor."

"Our Depot parking structure is a vital component in the City's efforts to enhance Berwyn's quality of life. We are so proud to have brought this project to completion," stated Mayor Robert J. Lovero.

Berwyn Development Corporation President, Paul Zimmermann, concurred, "The completion of the parking facility is yet another example of the successful partnership between the City and the BDC."

BDC Executive Director, Anthony Griffin, reported that this project has been funded in part by the Illinois Department of Transportation and West Suburban Mass Transit District/Metra with the majority of funding from the City of Berwyn. Despite severely depressed economic conditions over the past year, Berwyn moved forward with the $10.3 million dollar project. The project generated an average of 32 jobs during the construction period and, as an ancillary benefit, assisted a strained construction industry by creating demand for materials and equipment.
