Clinical Vigilance™ for Sepsis: Cooper University Hospital Study Presented at SAEM

SAN DIEGO, May 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Amara Health Analytics today announced that the company's software, Clinical Vigilance™ for Sepsis, was used to study the impact of timely administration of antibiotics in cases of severe sepsis. The study was conducted by researchers at Cooper University Hospital, and it is being presented this week at the Society for Academic Emergency Medicine (SAEM) annual meeting in Atlanta.

Sepsis is likely the leading cause of death worldwide. In the U.S., it is the leading cause of death in non-coronary ICUs and the 10th leading cause of death overall. Severe sepsis costs the healthcare system over $17 billion annually.

"The Cooper study used the timing of alerts provided by Clinical Vigilance™ for Sepsis to associate earlier treatment with better patient outcomes, lower mortality, and reduced hospital lengths-of-stay. We are making the system available to any center interested in enhancing its ability to identify and treat sepsis." said Steve Nathan, CEO of Amara.

Clinical Vigilance™ for Sepsis is distinguished by its use of natural language processing, real-time intelligent filtering of physiological signals, and semantic interpretation of all available patient data. "Our software provides a unique combination of early alerting and an extremely low false positive rate.  This is critical to the success of our approach because clinicians will not use a system unless it provides significant value while avoiding the 'alarm fatigue' caused by many traditional alerting systems," said Dr. Christopher Rosin, Amara's Chief Scientist.

Clinical Vigilance™ for Sepsis is currently in operation at multiple centers in the U.S. The system does not require any significant clinical workflow changes, and depends only on patient data already being collected as part of the current standard of care.
