Polycarbonate
Polycarbonate's main end use sector - optical media, is now being superseded by other technologies and is in decline. As a consequence, the industry is working hard to develop other applications to take over from optical media and continue to drive demand. The potential impact of new applications will be considered in the study.
Despite the slowdown in demand, new polycarbonate capacity continues to be built, which is likely to lead to margin compression and a consequent delay in new projects and/or a rationalization of existing capacity in the coming years.
ABS
ABS is the largest volume engineering resin and has a relatively mature market. As such, the industry is not suffering from the same adverse demand impact that is affecting polycarbonate with the decline of optical media applications. Of greater concern to the ABS industry is the changing upstream raw material balance. The general cost advantage of natural gas over crude oil has reduced the availability of ABS feedstocks produced from liquid cracker feeds. This has particularly impacted butadiene availability, which in coming years will impact the economics of ABS production.
