Corporation for Education Network Initiatives in California Signs Contract With AT&T Hundreds of High-Bandwidth Circuits Awarded to Beef Up Cutting-Edge CalREN

    CYPRESS, Calif., April 17 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE:   T)
 has announced a new five-year $50 million contract with the Corporation for
 Education Network Initiatives in California (CENIC) to increase broadband
 connectivity for its California Research and Education Network (CalREN).
 The contract will serve every segment of the state's public education
 system and the 9.5 million Californians who use CalREN every day.
 
     CENIC is a nonprofit corporation that supports more than 250
 educational and research entities across the state. It was created to
 leverage the resources of California's educational and research communities
 in order to obtain cost-effective, high-bandwidth networking to support
 their missions and answer the needs of their faculty, staff and students.
 Under terms of the agreement, educational institutions throughout
 California will get a massive boost in capacity, with up to 250
 high-capacity circuits.
 
     For more than 10 years, California's research and educational
 communities have been served by CalREN, a separate, high-performance
 Internet-based network. Owned and operated by CENIC, CalREN provides high
 bandwidth connectivity to all of California's public education
 institutions, from kindergarten classrooms to postgraduate universities,
 including a significant number of private and independent universities.
 
     CalREN enables data sharing, grid computing, cutting-edge science,
 breathtaking telepresence and video conferencing, distance learning and
 large collaborative projects. Through its connections to national research
 and educational networks, CalREN makes it possible for faculty,
 researchers, teachers, staff and students in the state to collaborate with
 peers and extend their vision throughout California, the nation and the
 world.
