CSUSM Extended Learning Offers Workshop on Surviving an Active Shooter On May 15, 2014, CSUSM Extended Learning will offer a workshop at the CSUSM Temecula campus focused on educating the public about what to do in the event of an active shooter or other violent incident.
SAN MARCOS, Calif., May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- San Marcos, Calif. — May 2 — Continuing the university's commitment to serving the North San Diego and Southwest Riverside communities, CSUSM Extended Learning will offer a valuable workshop focused on "Surviving an Active Shooter or Other Violent Incident" on Thursday, May 15, 2014 from 6-9 pm at the CSUSM Temecula campus. Registration for this important event is open to the public.
"Surviving an Active Shooter or Other Violent Incident" addresses the best ways to prepare for, and manage, an active shooter and other acts of violence. Ron Hackenberg, a former police chief with 35 years of law enforcement experience, will facilitate the workshop and teach participants how to assess an environment for potential threats, respond appropriately should the unthinkable occur, and be prepared to take potentially lifesaving action.
While rare, these tragedies have devastating immediate and long-term impacts both on the victims and on the community. Participants can learn the components of an effective survival plan, and how to respond safely when law enforcement and other first responders arrive on the scene.
"This workshop focuses on a topic that is important but often misunderstood," explains Mike Schroder, Dean of Extended Learning at CSUSM. "By bringing in an expert speaker and helping participants learn about effective responses, we hope to educate community members and increase awareness and understanding. This kind of outreach is vital to CSUSM's role not just as an educational institution, but as a community partner."
On the same day, CSUSM will also offer "Dreaming & Driving: The Risks & Remedies of Driving Drowsy." This free workshop from 1-4 pm on the Temecula campus raises awareness of the dangers of driving while sleep deprived. Registration is free.
The "Surviving an Active Shooter or Other Violent Incident" workshop costs $50. As a bonus, all paid registrants are allowed to bring one free guest. To learn more and register for this workshop, visit www.csusm.edu/el or call 760-750-4020.
