Dade Medical College hosts Pink Healthcare Mixer to benefit American Cancer Society and Better Florida Foundation

MIAMI, Oct. 23, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- For those of you who missed it, Dade Medical College (DMC) held its 3rd annual Pink Healthcare Mixer at Monty's Raw Bar & Restaurant in Coconut Grove on October 11, 2012 in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The college donated $5,000 to American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer campaign, and raised over $100,000 between cash commitments and in-kind donations for the Better Florida Foundation (BFF) – a Florida-registered nonprofit organization led by DMC's own Vice President of Community and Governmental Relations, Elizabeth Martinez.

These donations will allow BFF to commence its mission of providing increased relief for breast cancer patients, HIV patients, and those children/families afflicted with severe or terminal diseases, which don't allow the parent(s) to both work and provide care for their child(ren).

BFF's intent is not to provide research dollars or awareness dollars; we believe that other organizations raise enough for those projects. Our intent is to provide immediate and efficient relief to those most in need who reside in the communities in which our campuses are and in which we serve.

In addition, these donations will allow DMC to donate 1,000 mammography screenings to low-income and uninsured women in an effort to increase breast cancer awareness and preventative care for the disease.

Elizabeth Martinez said, "Many of us have been touched in some way by cancer and with a large population of female employees and students, breast cancer is specifically near and dear to our hearts. We're honored to be able to offer these free life-saving screenings to the community and to help raise awareness so that one day we no longer have to worry that our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends will be affected."

DMC CEO, Ernesto Perez said, "We would like to thank those who came to show their support for the cause, including State Rep. Carlos Trujillo, State Rep. Eduardo Gonzalez, Senator Rene Garcia, incoming State Rep. Manny Diaz and Commissioner Esteban Bovo, as well as Commissioner Xavier Suarez for his pioneering donation to BFF. We hope to see our friends in public office follow suit in the endeavor to help ease some of the hardships felt by those less fortunate in our community."
