DALLAS, June 14, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- The Texas Department of Transportation recently launched its twelfth annual Click It or Ticket campaign. Seat belts first debuted 45 years ago when legislation enacted under President Lyndon B. Johnson's tenure mandated that all cars must have seat belts. To honor President Johnson's dedication to safety, Texas's annual seat belt safety campaign launched at the LBJ Library in Austin with a car show demonstrating the progression of seat belts over time.
When the Click It or Ticket campaign first began in 2002, just 76 percent of Texans wore seat belts. Now, 94 percent of Texans wear seat belts. Much of this increase may be due to the Click It or Ticket campaign; the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration estimates that the campaign has saved nearly 3,700 lives and prevented more than 50,000 serious injuries since its inception.
Texas law requires all passengers to wear a seat belt, including passengers who ride in the back seat of a car. During the Click It or Ticket campaign this year, law enforcement officials across the state will be ticketing unbuckled drivers and passengers. Each unbuckled occupant faces a ticket and fines up to $200, plus court costs. In 2012, more than 21,200 seat belt citations were issued during the campaign.
