WASHINGTON, May 23, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Washington, D.C. is the third most attractive domestic destination for the average U.S. traveler this summer, according to a recent CardHub.com study comparing airfare costs, flight times, and the number of connections associated with traveling to the 10 most popular domestic and international vacation destinations this summer.
Other highlights from the study include:
- Washington ranks as the best U.S. departure city for international travel in 2013.
- Washington is the 13th best departure city for domestic travel.
- The most attractive domestic destinations are New York, Chicago, and D.C., while Cancun, Playa del Carmen, and Montego Bay top the list for international vacationers.
- The average flight to one of this summer's most popular international vacation destinations costs $1,193, takes 13 hours, and has one connection, compared to $540, 5 and a half hours, and 0.40 connections for the average domestic flight.
"Washington D.C.'s high rankings in our Best & Worst Cities for Summer Travel study are undoubtedly buoyed by the close proximity of three major airports – Washington Dulles, Reagan National, & BWI. Not only does that give travelers a number of booking options, but it also means there is stiff competition among air carriers for business, which puts downward pressure on prices," Odysseas Papadimitriou, CardHub's CEO and a widely-respected personal finance veteran, said. "It's also important to note that the majority of the most popular international vacation spots are in Europe and the Caribbean, while five of the most popular domestic destinations are on the East Coast. That helped the likes of D.C., New York, and Philadelphia score high marks and helps explain why California cities ranked 26th on average among departure points for international travel."
