WASHINGTON, Dec. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The leaders of the effort to save the endangered D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, Kevin P. Chavous (former D.C. Councilman) and Virginia Walden Ford (executive director of D.C. Parents for School Choice) tonight issued the following statement:

"Thousands of parents and school choice supporters from across the country have joined us in calling their senators and demanding that the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program be saved. It is essential that these calls continue and that the Senate hears the voices of all Americans who believe that low-income children deserve the opportunity to go to great schools. It is a moral outrage that Congress may refuse to permit new students into the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program, an initiative that is successful and effective by every measure. As the Senate debates tonight and tomorrow on the omnibus appropriations bill and nears a vote, we sincerely hope that one senator in the majority -- and it just takes one -- will stand up and refuse to allow this bill to pass without meaningfully saving the D.C. Opportunity Scholarship Program. And make no mistake: we will not give up. We intend to continue to fight for D.C.'s low-income children. Now is the time for senators to stand with those children."
