DebMed Supports Goals of National Patient Safety Awareness Week
Company Encourages Healthcare Organizations to "Lead the Change" by Adopting Hand Hygiene Best Practices that Reduce Infections and Save Lives
CHARLOTTE, N.C., March 4, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- DebMed®, creator of the world's first electronic hand hygiene compliance monitoring system based on the World Health Organization's (WHO's) Five Moments for Hand Hygiene, proudly supports the goals of National Patient Safety Awareness Week, March 3-9, 2013, an annual education and awareness campaign for health care safety led by the National Patient Safety Foundation (NPSF).
This dedicated week recognizes the advancements that have been made in patient safety, while acknowledging the challenges that remain. This year's theme is "Patient Safety 7/365: 7 days of recognition, 365 days of commitment to safe care." This is an important reminder that providing safe patient care requires unwavering commitment and awareness throughout the year.
Patient safety is one of the nation's most pressing healthcare challenges. According to the 1999 landmark report by the Institute of Medicine, To Err Is Human: Building a Safer Health System, it is estimated that as many as 98,000 people die in U.S. hospitals each year as a result of medical error. Many believe that the actual number of deaths is higher, and when combined with other non-fatal adverse events, it is clear this is a critical public health issue.
A key component to advancing patient safety is proper hand hygiene, recognized as the number one way to prevent healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), yet the typical rate of hand hygiene compliance among healthcare workers is estimated to be only 40 to 50 percent. HAIs account for nearly 2 million infections annually in the U.S.
"Clearly, better adherence to hand hygiene standards is necessary to truly improve patient safety and quality," said Heather McLarney, Vice President of Marketing, DebMed. "DebMed is dedicated to empowering healthcare facilities with solutions to improve hand hygiene compliance, reduce infections and protect patients."
- One in 20 hospitalized patients will get a healthcare-associated infection as a result of the care they receive in the hospital, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
- Healthcare-associated infections cost U.S. hospitals an estimated $28.4 to $45 billion each year.
- Thirty-five percent of healthcare facilities across the globe do not adequately promote hand hygiene practices, according to the World Health Organization.
- Electronic monitoring of hand hygiene in healthcare organizations is an efficient, cost effective and more accurate method to improve hand hygiene and protect patients
