DebMed® to Participate in Georgia Association for Healthcare Quality Patient Safety Summit 2014 Regional and National Healthcare Leaders to Discuss Best Practices for Increasing Patient Safety

CHARLOTTE, N.C., May 2, 2014 /PRNewswire/ --

What: The upcoming Georgia Association for Healthcare Quality (GAHQ) Patient Safety Summit aims to continually improve the quality of healthcare in Georgia by providing and supporting a strong education and networking process for members. The GAHQ is the state affiliate of the National Association for Healthcare Quality (NAHQ). Experts will come together to discuss an array of topics including safety concerns from the patient's perspective, the implementation of strategies and lessons learned from high reliability organizations.

Who: Paul Alper, vice president, patient safety strategy for DebMed, creator of the world's first electronic hand hygiene compliance monitoring system based on standards set by the World Health Organization (WHO) and Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), will present "Hospital Hand Hygiene."

The objective of Alper's presentation is to provide attendees with the knowledge of recent scientific, clinical and economic rationale for improving hand hygiene as a means to reducing hospital acquired infections (HAIs) and related costs. According to the CDC, in the U.S. alone, 1 in 25 patients get an infection, resulting in 1.7 million infections per year and causing 99,000 deaths at a cost of $45 billion. Additionally, Alper will discuss the need for electronic monitoring and the importance of making it a standard in hospitals based on the WHO's 5 Moments for Hand Hygiene.

Other experts participating in the summit include:

  • Ellen Hargett, President of the Georgia Association for Healthcare Quality and HAI survivor
  • Ridley Barron, President Ridley Barron, Inc.
  • Martha White, President of the Georgia Association for Healthcare Quality
  • Ann Scott Blouin, Executive Vice President of  Customer Relations, The Joint Commission

Why: Patient safety remains a critical issue in hospitals and GAHQ is committed to improve the quality of healthcare in Georgia by providing education and networking events for healthcare professionals within the state. By creating strategic partnerships with organizations that share the same values, they are able to provide continuous learning to GAHQ members from other groups and industries.

"Healthcare-associated infections remain a top 10 patient safety issue for 2014, as historical methods of direct observation and self-reporting have proved to be unreliable and inaccurate," said Paul Alper. "Since the introduction of the DebMed® GMS™ electronic monitoring hand hygiene system, hospitals and other healthcare organizations have seen a noted increase in hand hygiene compliance rates, which is critical to preventing the spread of the infection and keeping patients and staff safe. This summit should encourage all clinical staff to bring attention to your senior leadership the need to adopt better, more accurate ways to measure hand hygiene in an effort to improve patient safety."

Where: DeKalb Medical Center
2701 North Decatur Road, GA 30033
