Following a 3.5-mile course through the Flint Cultural Center,
approximately 400 employees and their friends and families will walk in the
fourth annual Flint event. Last year's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer
in Flint raised $200,000. Also in 2001, nationwide 350,000 walkers collected
more than $26 million. Since 1993, on a national level, Making Strides
Against Breast Cancer has raised more than $100 million.
"Delphi is proud to help the American Cancer Society fight breast cancer,"
said Guy C. Hachey, vice president, Delphi Corp., and president, Delphi Energy
& Chassis Systems. "Progress is being made against this disease, which
touches so many of our employees -- either directly or among their family and
friends. It's gratifying to know that participating in Making Strides Against
Breast Cancer and generating pledges will help contribute to important
research, education, patient support and advocacy programs to defeat it." Guy
Hachey is also a kickoff speaker at the event.
Breast cancer, the second leading cause of cancer death among women, will
strike approximately 205,000 women this year, and about 40,000 will die of the
disease. Approximately 1,500 men will die of breast cancer this year as well.
"One of the reasons that we continue to join in this effort is the
dedication of the Genesee County Cancer Society itself and its willingness to
help in this community," said Steve Dawes, president, UAW Local 651. "Their
efforts remind us that behind the statistics are people just like us. When
people walk in this event they may be walking in support of the cause itself,
or because of a family member or a friend who has been touched by this
disease. Whatever the individual reason, we come together in support of
finding a cure."
"With so many of our employees and their friends and families impacted by
the disease, this event is an important opportunity for us to make a
difference," said Cheryl A. Kilborn, director, public affairs &
communications, Delphi Energy & Chassis Systems. "The contributions that the
walkers will raise on Saturday will have a direct impact in the lives of those
who battle breast cancer in terms of expanded research and in individual
patient outreach."
Delphi is a flagship sponsor of the event, along with BankOne and Kroger,
local media sponsors ABC12 and CARS108 FM, and national media sponsor
Discovery Health Channel.
