Delphi China won five of 18 awards presented by Shanghai GM at the
automaker's annual recognition early this year for achievement in 2003.
Delphi was selected from a field of 179 suppliers to Shanghai GM for those
awards, including one Best Supplier Award and four Excellent Supplier Awards
(see winners list below).
Delphi achieved this recognition for excellence in product quality,
delivery, and service of its industry-leading products including maintenance
free batteries, dynamics and propulsion systems, engine management systems,
exhaust emissions control systems, and door latches and door modules.
"Receiving such recognition from our major customers in China is a great
honor," says Choon Chon, president, Delphi Asia Pacific. "It demonstrates
that Delphi is exceeding our customers' expectations by providing them with
excellent quality and delivery."
In 2003, Delphi won a total of 15 awards for its distinguished performance
from its China-based customers, a list which covers almost all the major
automakers in the country. China is the third largest auto-producing country
in the world.
According to Yudong Chen, chief engineer of China operations of Delphi
Energy, Chassis, and Steering, the definition of an "excellent supplier" in
China has been expanded to include product development and research and
development capabilities. "Customers are putting an increased value on
technology. Delphi's leadership position in the industry enables us to
leverage our global resources to better serve customers in China."
Delphi's strength in delivering high-tech environmentally friendly
products and technologies that help reduce emissions and fuel consumption is
well recognized by customers. Of the five supplier awards Delphi earned from
Shanghai GM, four were given to operations that produce environmentally
friendly products, such as engine management systems, catalytic converters,
and maintenance-free batteries.
As part of its commitment to follow its customers, Delphi has been
investing in the China market since 1993 and its total investment reached
US$450 million by the end of 2003. It now operates 11 manufacturing legal
entities in 14 locations, a technical center, and a training center in the
country. Delphi's consolidated sales in China reached US$650 million in 2003.
