Oct 08, 1998, 01:00 ET from Interplay Entertainment Corp.
IRVINE, Calif., Oct. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Interplay Entertainment Corp.
(Nasdaq: IPLY) announced today that an expansion disk for their top-selling
space combat sim, Descent: FreeSpace -- The Great War(TM), hit retail shelves
September 30, 1998. Developed by original FreeSpace creator Volition Inc., an
affiliate of Parallax Software, Descent: FreeSpace -- Silent Threat(TM) is
compatible with Windows(R) 95-based computers with full installation of the
original FreeSpace game.
Fans of FreeSpace were given the opportunity to contribute to the
development of Silent Threat by creating their own missions using the
critically acclaimed FreeSpace Mission Editor (FRED), included in the original
full version of FreeSpace. Interplay hosted a mission design contest on their
website (www.interplay.com). Missions were evaluated based on creativity and
playability, with select entries included and credited in Silent Threat.
Every person who submitted a mission received a copy of the game and three
grand prizewinners will be selected at a later date. With over 40 new
missions total, 15 were created by Volition and Interplay and the remaining
missions are consumer-based.
Silent Threat features two new ships that join the squadron of 40 and two
new primary and two secondary weapons to challenge players to trash the sky
with enemy debris. As the Great War rages on you've been commissioned by the
GTI (Galactic Terran Intelligence) for special intelligence operations. In a
matter of National Security you've been asked to go behind enemy lines in
order to preserve the fragile space treaty.
