Detroit Cristo Rey High School Celebrates 100% College Acceptance for its Seniors
DETROIT, April 20, 2012 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Every senior in the first graduating class of Detroit Cristo Rey High School has been accepted to at least one college or university, according to Susan Rowe, principal of the school. The announcement was made at an assembly of the school's 220+ students on Thursday, April 19.
In addition to 100% college acceptance, the 46 seniors have been offered more than $1 million in scholarships and financial aid to date, according to Rowe.
"From the day we began four years ago, with just a freshman class, we described this as an 8-year program," said Rowe. "We are here to prepare students for college, and expect them to continue working toward a 4-year college degree."
"These students are the future of this city," said Mike Khoury, president of the school. "Detroit Cristo Rey is proof that, with great expectations, hard work by the students and faculty, and support from the community, what some might consider lofty goals are definitely achievable."
"In addition to achieving 100% college acceptance," said Khoury, "we know from other schools in the Cristo Rey network that Cristo Rey students enroll in college above the national average and persist in college above the national average."
Detroit Cristo Rey High School, located in southwest Detroit, was created to educate underserved students. A co-ed, Catholic school, Detroit Cristo Rey is one of 24 schools in the Cristo Rey network in the U.S. All students participate in a corporate work study program, where they work entry-level professional positions five days per month. This year, Detroit Cristo Rey students worked with more than 85 businesses and earned more than $1.1 million toward their educational expenses. The school looks to expand the number of businesses involved as the school enrollment continues to grow. For more information, visit www.detroitcristorey.org.
