DETROIT, March 24 /PRNewswire/ -- The following is a club statement regarding the passing of former Detroit Tigers player and broadcaster George Kell, attributable to Tigers owner Michael Ilitch:
"We are deeply saddened by the passing of legendary Detroit Tiger and Hall of Famer George Kell. George was part of the fabric of the Tiger ball club for many years -- both on the field and off. Following his Hall of Fame career playing third base, he further became a household name as a play-by-play announcer for the Tigers and helped bring the game he loved to life for so many watching and listening at home. George truly embodied what it meant to be 'always a Tiger' -- he was a competitor, a gentleman and one of the true greats of the game, and he will be missed. The entire Detroit Tiger Baseball Club and I extend our sincere condolences to George's wife Carolyn, his family and friends."
