Stretch marks are scars that develop during periods of hormonal changes such as puberty, pregnancy or weight gain. Under the affect of hormones, the fibroblasts (i.e. the cells responsible for our skin's architecture which produce the collagen and elastin fibers) undergo a state of imbalance that leads to the atrophy of collagen and elastin fibers. As a consequence, the skin becomes thinner. Small, parallel striations, pale pink to purplish pink in color, begin to line the surface: this is known as stretch marks.

According to the book Stretch Marks, From Their Clinical Aspects to Their Treatment, written by Dr. Nina Roos and Dr. Anny Cohen-Letessier, stretch marks are extremely common and develop before the age of 50.  They affect more than 40-50% of the young population, mainly Caucasians, essentially female (60-80% of women compared to 10-30% of men.) They mainly develop during puberty, with a variable overall incidence depending on the series: from 25-35% up to 70% of girls and 40% of boys.  Concerning pregnant women, according to the authors, 50-90% of primiparae will develop stretch marks as of the 6th month of pregnancy on the stomach, the breasts, or hips.
