NEW YORK, Feb. 19, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- Are you one of the few human beings left on the earth who still has no idea what The Harlem Shake is all about? The time has come to join the tech savvy kids and the wise middle aged geeks who live and breathe Internet Memes and YouTube videos. Put the children to bed, buckle your seat belts and prepare yourself for the latest insane dance craze to sweep the Planet. Its time to do The Harlem Shake - Con Los Terroristas.
OK, lets backtrack a moment and describe The Harlem Shake. Even though you know how to use Google, why do a search when we can do the work for you and share a laugh or three in the process. The Harlem Shake began as a mildly popular song recorded by American DJ and producer Baauer. It made its debut as a free digital download by Mad Decent imprint label Jeffree's on May 22, 2012.
The song has a grinding, infectious beat that is hard to resist. When you hear the synthesizer, backed by the hard hitting snares and the driving bass, your body will begin to twitch When the track samples Plastic Little's 2001 song "Miller Time" and you hear a deep voice shout "then do the Harlem shake," you are almost ready. Then the lion begins to growl in the background, the vocalist yells "Con Los Terroristas" and all resistance is futile. You jump to your feet, move your upper body like mad, and you "Do the Harlem shake."
Even with the success of the song, The Harlem Shake would not have reached the pinnacle of popularity were it not for YouTube and six crazy Australian teens called The Sunny Coast Skate. They uploaded a video of the group dancing to the song to YouTube, and as the saying goes, the rest is history. The video caught on like a wild Australian brush-fire raging through the Outback and soon everyone was making their own YouTube version of The Harlem Shake.
Fast forward nine months to February, 2013. There are now over 40,000 individual Harlem Shake videos on YouTube that have been watched by 175 million people. While we will never know for certain, it is more than likely that many viewers found the urge irresistible and did "The Harlem Shake" as the video played in the background, panicking household pets, disturbing roommates, frightening spouses, and alarming parents.
Today, the dance is both a beloved Internet meme and a social phenomenon. Kids do it in High School, Chinese grandmothers do it in a Beijing park, soldiers do it at the end of a long march, sailors do it in the Navy recruiting office and students do it at universities around the world. The Harlem Shake is everywhere and no one knows where it may strike next.
You may be sitting in a crowded restaurant, when a customer tuns on a small tape recorder, plays The Harlem Shake and begins to gyrate like a madman. Just as you are about to get up and go find the manager, the restaurant's speaker system erupts with the song and all the other diners jump up and join the dance. You are now part of the action and you have two choices; run for the door or join the fun and DO THE HARLEM SHAKE- CON LOS TERRORISTAS.
