Doorways to Dreams Fund (D2D) Uses Dancing Game to Teach Basic Budgeting
BOSTON, June 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Doorways to Dreams (D2D) Fund, a financial innovation nonprofit organization in Boston, MA, has released its second adult financial literacy video game, Groove Nation. Part of a library of financial education games, D2D's second title focuses on budgeting, using a casual dance game to teach balancing expenses and savings. D2D's first game, Celebrity Calamity, was developed by Enspire Learning in Austin, Texas and released in 2009, and helps adults understand credit and debit.
"Managing personal finances is, for most people, very stressful and can be overwhelming. We are using fun, casual video games to relieve some of the stress associated with managing money and to help boost knowledge and confidence around spending and saving," said Nick Maynard, Director of Innovation at D2D Fund.
According to recent reports, over 200 million people play casual games online every week. Groove Nation and the other games in the D2D library, use this interest to create innovative and exciting opportunities to learn about money management. Groove Nation employs a casual dance game mechanic to develop better budgeting skills. Like its predecessor, Groove Nation was developed in collaboration with and for low-to-moderate income women, 18 to 35 years old, and tested with partners in Austin, TX and Boston, MA. Preliminary findings indicate increased knowledge and confidence related to personal budgeting.
As part of its launch of Groove Nation, D2D Fund, in partnership with the Center for Financial Services Innovation, will unveil the game at the 2010 Underbanked Financial Services Forum, June 9-11 in Miami, Florida. This three day conference focuses on innovative financial services and solutions for the growing underbanked consumer market, seeking to unite financial institution executives with nonprofits and government leaders to improve financial products and services and expand savings and asset building opportunities for consumers.
