WILMINGTON, Del., Oct. 25 /PRNewswire/ -- DuPont, the driving innovator
and present day leader behind the life-saving protective materials of
DuPont(TM) Kevlar(R) and DuPont(TM) Nomex(R), is showcasing its longstanding
relationship with the U.S. Armed Forces with a historical display at the
Association of the U.S. Army convention. The display depicts the science
company's innovations in supporting and protecting the American soldier over
the last 200 years.
As a global leader in safety and protection, DuPont's bullet-resistant
Kevlar(R) and flame-resistant Nomex(R) are essential materials protecting
today's U.S. military personnel stationed abroad and serving the public at
home. DuPont(TM) Kevlar(R) brand fiber is a key component in nearly all
helmets and body armor used by U.S. military soldiers. DuPont(TM) Kevlar(R)
is the life-saving force in blast mitigation, bomb blankets for bomb
decommissioning and detonation, armored vehicles and aircraft security
applications. DuPont(TM) Nomex(R) brand fiber is designed for thermal
protection and is a key component in flight suits worn by nearly all military
Long before these modern scientific breakthroughs, DuPont began its
relationship with the country at the urging of Thomas Jefferson, who persuaded
company founder E.I. du Pont to help supply gunpowder for the emerging nation
in 1802. Since that time, DuPont has continued its commitment to U.S.
military personnel by developing safety and protection products and services
that shield, shelter, outfit and support U.S. military and civilian personnel
at home and overseas.
"DuPont has a storied heritage and relationship with the U.S. Armed Forces
which extends back to this country's formative years," said Greg Parker, North
America business manager, Life Protection. "With its proud record of service,
DuPont continues to be a scientific ally for the United States Army. We help
provide the armed forces with an arsenal of protection that was unimaginable
in the past, and we look forward to continuing this role long into the
One example of the DuPont commitment to enhance the technology of
materials for use by today and tomorrow's warfighter is through the company's
partnership with the U.S. Army Research Office and the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology in the Institute for Soldier Nanotechnologies (ISN). The goal
of ISN is to increase the protection and survival rate of U.S. soldiers with
new technologies. As a founding science partner of ISN, DuPont is exploring
nanotechnology and developing protective lightweight molecular materials to
equip the U.S. soldier of the future with uniforms and gear that will help
heal them, shield them and protect them in warfare.
In addition to protecting the health of the warfighter, DuPont is
developing technology to provide power for the dismounted soldier.
State-of-the-art Direct Methanol Fuel Cell (DMFC) technology uses DuPont
components (based on DuPont(TM) Nafion(R)) and provides 4 times the energy
density of primary batteries for a 72-hour mission. A member of the Army
Collaborative Technology Alliance on Power and Energy, DuPont is actively
working to enhance the performance and durability of membrane electrode
assemblies, the core components in a fuel cell. Through partnerships with
system developers, the improved components are enabling next-generation DMFC
power supplies that are smaller, lighter and able to deliver power to the
soldier under a broader range of environmental conditions.
"Throughout DuPont's long history with the U.S. military, there has always
been a single driving force behind our work - the safety of the American
soldier," said Parker. "We look forward to continuing this relationship for
many years to come and developing products to help ensure American soldiers
are protected from every battlefront scenario."
