Easter Seals Coastal Fairfield County To Close Camp Hemlocks

HEBRON, Conn., Sept. 30, 2013 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Easter Seals Coastal Fairfield County (CFC) will close Camp Hemlocks in Hebron later this Fall. The organization's decision to close the camp was driven by financial reasons. Camp Hemlocks has not operated at full capacity for many years and Easter Seals CFC does not have the financial resources to continue funding increased maintenance and operational costs.

"Closing Camp Hemlocks is a decision that was not made lightly, but after an extensive review, this was the best decision for the organization and the people we serve," said Dr. Roslyn D. Burton-Robertson, PhD, Executive Director of Easter Seals CFC. "Camp Hemlocks is so near and dear to the people who have enjoyed the camp in summers past, and it is with a heavy heart that we must say goodbye."

To make the transition for families as smooth as possible the Camp will stay open in the near term so that Easter Seals CFC is able to honor all existing contracts.   Easter Seals CFC has acknowledged the impact the absence will have on the community, campers, staff and donors and has informed its constituents of the closing.

To shift its priorities, Easter Seals CFC plans to expand its existing services in Coastal Fairfield County by providing respite and self-advocacy programs. These programs not only provide relief for caregivers but inspire confidence and independence for individuals with special needs.   The program will initiate broad-based public education designed to make community members more aware of, more comfortable with, and more supportive of the presence and participation of those with developmental disabilities in the community.
