EE Times-Asia and Gartner Dataquest Joint Survey 'Design Trends & EDA Tools: Taiwan' Reveals Strong Growth for Taiwan's EDA Software Market
HONG KONG, Oct. 2 /PRNewswire/ -- Global Sources Ltd. (Nasdaq: GSOL), the
global merchandise trade enabler and Gartner Dataquest today announced the
results of a joint study conducted by Electronic Engineering Times-Asia
(EE Times-Asia), the bi-weekly design engineering publication and the leading
market research firm, Dataquest Inc., a unit of Gartner, Inc.
(NYSE: IT and ITB).
With Taiwan poised for strong growth in the worldwide Electronic Design
Automation (EDA) software market, the study was undertaken to identify current
and emerging trends in Taiwan's design activities. The research was based on
an online survey sent to more than 12,000 design and test engineers in Taiwan.
The respondents associated EDA software usage with their product designs
across eleven industry sectors, including consumer electronics, computers and
computer peripherals, datacom/networking, telecommunications and design
services.
"Conducting this joint study with Gartner Dataquest once again
demonstrates our commitment to the region's electronics industry," said Mark
A. Saunderson, Publisher of EE Times-Asia. "The partnership with Gartner
Dataquest underscores our position as the preferred infomediary for the Asian
engineering community."
Gartner Dataquest's worldwide EDA market share report published in July
2001 shows that the Asia-Pacific was the fastest growing region in 2000, with
an overall growth rate of approximately 24%. Taiwan, the largest EDA market
in the Asia-Pacific since 1998, purchased $53 million of EDA software in 2000.
As China vies with Taiwan to become the manufacturing base in Asia, Taiwan's
design services sector is expected to rapidly grow and demand EDA tools.
Gartner Dataquest estimates Taiwan's spending on EDA tools will increase by
20% to reach $63.7 million in 2001 and $126.7 million by 2005.
The joint research shows that the highest penetration of EDA solutions is
in consumer electronics and computers and computer peripherals with 28 percent
of survey respondents designing products for each industry.
Datacom/networking and telecom industries are the third largest EDA tool
consumers. The study also indicates that Taiwan's design engineers play a key
role in EDA tool purchases -? 82% of the respondents said their
design-engineering department is involved in making the purchase decisions.
"We have been successful in completing this study due to our collaboration
and partnership with EE Times-Asia. We conduct extensive worldwide EDA market
research annually to report market shares, trends and forecasts, and to
analyze user requirements. We are interested in Taiwan because of its
dominance amongst the regional consumers of EDA tools and its growing focus on
design activities. The survey findings are in line with our estimate that the
Taiwan market for EDA software will continue to increase rapidly," said
Gartner Dataquest analyst, Ms. Nancy Wu.
