"More than 34,000 classrooms participated in Elmer's Glue Crew
Recycling Program," said Terri Brown, Elmer's marketing services and
communications manager. "We want to congratulate Mrs. MaryGrace Clark, her
student teacher Mrs. Shannon Gibson and the students of Champion Central
Elementary School for their dedication to improving the community. Mrs.
Clark's students made an outstanding contribution to the program by
collecting more than 530 glue sticks and glue bottles in just three
Teachers across the country submitted award entries that detailed the
most creative and innovative ways they integrated recycling into classroom
lessons and activities for a chance to win the grand prize. Clark and
Gibson made Elmer's the program a part of their daily lesson plans by
integrating activities and projects that required the use of glue sticks
and glue bottles. Every day, the kindergartners would take turns collecting
the empty bottles and sticks from 11 additional classrooms they recruited
to participate. The students created a chart to track the collection
process and set a goal of collecting 200 bottles and sticks, which they
quickly surpassed. Clark and Gibson applied program activities to their
classroom lessons, with reading, writing and math exercises.
"The children practiced writing how many glue sticks they collected
each day, and every week we counted the bottles and sticks in our
collection box by tens and ones," said Gibson. "Some of these children
didn't understand the concept of recycling until we joined the Elmer's Glue
Crew Recycling Program, and now it's a large part of their daily routine."
As the grand prize winner, Mrs. Clark's students received trees planted
in their name in a national forest. Elmer's also hosted a tree planting at
their school, where each winning student received a certificate and an
Elmer's product package.
"Mrs. Gibson was the driving force behind bringing the program into my
classroom," said Clark. "The program was incredibly easy to integrate into
my lesson plans. It's easy to take advantage of the tools available on
www.elmersgluecrew.com in my ongoing efforts to encourage my students to
become lifelong recyclers."
Champion Central Elementary is located in Warren, Ohio, and is part of
the Champion Local School District in Trumbull County. The school is
comprised of 600 students, kindergarten through fourth grade.
The Elmer's Glue Crew Recycling Program is the first program of its
kind, combining Elmer's expertise in education and creativity with its
commitment to sustainable practices. Throughout the school year, nearly
three quarters of one million students collected empty glue bottles and
glue sticks. To reduce the environmental impact, teachers and students were
encouraged to creatively use empty boxes in the classroom as collection
boxes. Once the box was full, teachers simply sealed it, labeled it and
dropped it off to the People Greeter at the nearest Wal-Mart(R) store.
