Employment Policies Institute Launches $10 Million Campaign Urging the Public to Rethink Health Care Reform

Campaign Launches with National Television Commercial Featuring Former CBO Director June O'Neill Decrying "Accounting Gimmicks" to Hide the True Cost of Reform

WASHINGTON, Nov. 11 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Tomorrow (11/12) the Employment Policies Institute (EPI) will launch a $10 million, high-saturation advertising campaign to educate the public about the unintended consequences of doing too much too fast when it comes to health care reform. The possible dangers include adding to our already out-of-control national debt and placing burdens on job creation.

To launch this new national campaign, EPI will begin airing a national television commercial on Fox News featuring Dr. June O'Neill, former Director of the Congressional Budget Office. Dr. O'Neill makes the following case in the commercial:

Our country is facing an enormous debt crisis. Many of the plans to reform healthcare will make this crisis worse. As an economist and former director of the Congressional Budget Office, I'm deeply concerned about these health care reforms. They will add hundreds of billions of dollars to the already twelve trillion dollar national debt. We are paying five hundred million dollars a day in interest alone. This growing debt is unsustainable. It will have huge negative effects on jobs, taxes and our economy. Unfortunately, some politicians are using accounting gimmicks to hide the cost of these changes. And many seniors on Medicare will pay the price. Changes are necessary. But I fear these reforms are definitely not the answer.

"With the national debt about to top $12 trillion and a debilitating unemployment rate exceeding 10 percent, an impenetrable 2,000 page health care reform plan, such as the one under debate in Congress, poses grave dangers for our economy," said Richard Berman, Executive Director of the Employment Policies Institute. "Politicians who claim these reforms won't dig us deeper into debt are using, as Dr. June O'Neill says in our commercial, 'accounting gimmicks.'"

Berman continued, "Only in Washington could a plan that hurts seniors, young workers and millions of job creators still be called reform."
