Wal-Mart to carry first Windows-based computer featuring Open Source Word

Processor, Spreadsheet, Presentation Manager and More

Jul 18, 2007, 01:00 ET from First International Computer

FREMONT, Calif., July 18 /PRNewswire/ -- Everex, a world leader in the
design and production of personal computers, today unveiled its first PC
featuring open source productivity software from OpenOffice.org.
Powered by the energy-efficient VIA C7-D processor, the model GC3502
comes preloaded with the Microsoft Windows Vista(TM) Home Basic operating
system, 1GB of system memory, 80GB hard disk drive and DVD-ROM/CD-RW
optical drive. For the first time, Everex has also included OpenOffice.org
2.2, the critically acclaimed open-source office suite for word processing,
spreadsheets, presentations, graphics, databases and more.
"For years now, industry restrictions and tightening profit margins
have forced PC manufacturers to shy away from offering productivity
software on their new PCs," states Eugene Chang, Product Manager for
Everex. "In creating the eco-friendly GC3502, our main focus was to build a
no-compromise, back-to-school PC with all the software applications a
typical student would require, without resorting to bundling frivolous
trial versions or increasing prices 30%."
     OpenOffice.org 2.2 is a full-featured office productivity suite with a
familiar user interface. It runs on all major computing platforms, is
compatible with files created in Microsoft(R) Office, and may be used free
of license fees for any purpose, including commercial.
"This announcement is good news for students" comments John McCreesh,
Marketing Project Lead for OpenOffice.org. "We are delighted that
OpenOffice.org has passed all Everex's tests with flying colors. Everex
have stolen a march on their competitors by realizing that OpenOffice.org
gives their customers everything they need in office software -- with no
 extra costs, no strings attached."
The VIA C7-D processor powering the latest ROHS compliant Everex PC
draws less than 2W on average (with a maximum of 20W) to provide leading
performance per watt numbers across all popular productivity and
 entertainment applications.
"Working with forward-thinking partners like Everex, VIA's energy
efficient processor platforms are driving a new era in green computing,"
said Richard Brown, Vice President of Marketing, VIA Technologies, Inc.
"The IMPACT GC3502 is another excellent example of the productive
collaboration between Everex and VIA in bringing the latest computing and
communication technologies within reach of many more people."
The Everex IMPACT GC3502 is available at Wal-Mart stores throughout the
