Exchanging Bats for Golf Clubs ... Baseball Legends Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda will Play in 1st Annual GFDD Golf Tournament to Benefit the Dominican People
NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- Major League Baseball greats, Juan Marichal and Orlando Cepeda, will participate in the 1st Annual GFDD Golf Tournament, organized by Global Foundation for Democracy and Development (GFDD), to take place September 22, 2010.
The tournament seeks to raise funds to benefit GFDD, a foundation that promotes the educational and professional development of future generations of Dominicans throughout the world, and the social, economic and democratic development of the country through forums, conferences, seminars and higher education programs, in partnership with recognized international organizations.
"The programs that GFDD implements have already contributed to helping hundreds of Dominican youth to have a better future," stated the acclaimed Dominican baseball player Juan Marichal. "Its because of this that I am so enthusiastic about being part of an effort that seeks to support the higher education and professional development of my compatriots."
Marichal, commonly known as "El Dandy Dominicano," and Orlando Cepeda, one of San Francisco Giants most powerful batters, will compete with other renowned guests and world-class golfers under Stableford rules, using aggregate-medal play full handicap.
In a statement Cepeda expressed, "I am very honored to be participating together with Juan [Marichal] in GFDD's 1st Golf Tournament. It will be great to share with golfers and fans two things we love: passion for the sport and support for our people."
Golfers will play on the challenging par-71 golf course of the Saint Andrew's Golf Club, Hastings on the Hudson, New York, redesigned by Jack Nicklaus in 1983. The Club has been the site of many golf firsts, including the celebration of the first 100 years of golf in the United States, which assembled golf greats like Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Sam Snead, Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Jack Nicklaus, in 1988, and the 1995 "Founders Cup."
"We at GFDD are grateful for the favorable response that we have received from participants and from the general public. This first golf tournament promises to be very competitive. It is a stupendous way to contribute to the preparation of the next generation of Dominicans," expressed Yamile Eusebio, Director of the GFDD New York Office.
