"MSF is grateful to Expedia for supporting our relief efforts," said Jennifer Tierney, Director of Development, MSF-USA. "With their generous financial, in-kind, and pro-bono support, MSF will be able to provide assistance to people in war-torn countries like the Democratic Republic of Congo, or in the wake of natural disasters such as the recent earthquake in Haiti and the floods in Pakistan."
An international, independent organization founded nearly 40 years ago, Doctors Without Borders has 19 offices worldwide and medical humanitarian projects in nearly 70 countries, providing aid to those living in areas affected by armed conflict, epidemics, malnutrition, lack of health care and natural disasters.
Earlier this year, Expedia® made an initial donation to Doctors Without Borders as part of its employee matching gift program, through which the company matches employees' charitable donations up to $5,000 annually per employee. Doctors Without Borders was selected to receive Expedia's match to contributions made by company employees across the globe to fund relief efforts following the Pakistan floods. Expedia plans to continue this practice, providing donations to Doctors Without Borders that match overall employee charitable giving following major global catastrophes. Expedia also plans to explore other internal opportunities to fund additional contributions over the life of the relationship.
"At our foundation, Expedia is a global company with a desire to support the social, environmental, and economic conditions of communities around the world," said Dara Khosrowshahi, CEO of Expedia, Inc. "This sponsorship affords Expedia the opportunity to align our employees' humanitarian interests and desires to contribute on a global scale to an organization whose efforts bring aid to the suffering in the aftermath of unimaginable events. Their work is truly commendable, and we're honored for the opportunity to be a part of that."
This announcement marks the first time Expedia has made a formal commitment to Doctors Without Borders on a corporate scale, however TripAdvisor®, an Expedia, Inc. brand, donated $392,000 to the organization in 2008 as part of their 'More Than Footprints' philanthropic initiative.
