FALLS CHURCH, Va., Sept. 10 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- The Falls Church News-Press, an award-winning Northern Virginia weekly in its 19th year of publication, and its parent company, Benton Communications, Inc., both solely owned by Nicholas F. Benton, were certified by the Washington, D.C.-based National Gay and Lesbian Chamber of Commerce (NGLCC) last month as a "LGBT Business Enterprise."
"We are very proud to have qualified for this designation," Benton said in a statement. "It is the result of an arduous application process establishing the business as a bonafide, respected and successful enterprise, owned by an openly-gay individual."
Benton said that in addition to contributing to a long list of positive role models for LGBT persons of all ages, he hopes the formal designation will be a step toward acceptance by the federal government, including the Small Business Administration, and other agencies of LGBT-led companies as "minority-owned businesses" qualifying for benefits and advantages officially provided to other "minority-owned businesses."
"This designation also helps to provide corporate America with an opportunity to fulfill wishes of shareholders to make a conscious effort to extend their business to the LGBT community," Benton said. "In our case, our newspaper is an extremely effective, including cost-effective, means for businesses to benefit through advertising. We are the only locally-based newspaper with a fiercely-loyal readership in a large area inside the Washington, D.C. beltway of Northern Virginia where over 100,000 people have a collective $4 billion in annual disposable income."
"Not only can businesses benefit from advertising in the Falls Church News-Press, but they can set an example of support for minority-owned businesses that will please their shareholders and set a positive model, overall," Benton said.
Benton incorporated Benton Communications, Inc., in 1987 and established the Falls Church News-Press in March 1991. Officially certified as a "newspaper of record" qualified to publish legal notices by the Commonwealth of Virginia in 1993, it has twice been named "Business of the Year" by the Falls Church City Council and Benton was named "Businessman of the Year" by the City Council and twice named the "Pillar of the Community" by the Falls Church Chamber of Commerce.
