NANTUCKET, Mass., July 16, 2013 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- "SEE LIFE" IN NANTUCKET Nantucket , MA
The Seven Seas Gallery by Vanessa Noel exhibits "See Life," a show of new work by West Coast photographer Matthew Carden.
The Seven Seas Gallery on Nantucket Island is featuring "See Life," a debut show of new work by San Francisco Bay Area photographer Matthew Carden.
The show, which runs from July 4th through Sept 15, includes two new series of photographs by Carden. "Cake" and "Salt," each series uses common food items to create evocative landscapes and seascapes while reshaping our vision of the everyday. The gallery will host a public reception with artist Matthew Carden on Thursday, July 25th, from 7-9pm.
For "Cake," Carden took his inspiration from the history of the building housing the Seven Seas Gallery, which was originally owned by George Pollard, sea captain of the Essex, the whaling ship whose destruction by a enormous, murderous sperm whale was the inspiration for Herman Melville's Moby-Dick. In oblique and surprising ways, "Cake" explores the ill-fated journey of the Essex from Nantucket to the South Pacific.
In amusing yet thoughtful ways, "Salt" reimagines carefree summer scenes through a landscape built on this most elementary part of our daily diet, using miniatures to construct scenarios that blur our perspectives of familiar reality through whimsical shifts in scale. Each photograph in "Cake" and "Salt" is available in exclusive numbered editions of 1 through 10.
Carden's show is in partnership with Sustainable Nantucket, a local organization whose mission is to preserve the community character of Nantucket while sustaining its economic and environmental vitality. A percentage of the proceeds from sales of Carden's work will go to support Sustainable Nantucket.
Food, and our relationship to it, is a major theme in Carden's work, and so, fittingly, Sustainable Nantucket will be hosting its 4th annual "Farm Fresh Feast" at the historic family-run Bartlett's Farm on Sat., July 20th in conjunction with Carden's "See Life" show. The event includes an open-air cocktail party and silent auction, followed by a sit-down dinner, live auction, and dancing. For tickets and more information, go to www.sustainablenantucket.org.
Opened in 1994, the Seven Seas Gallery is owned by hotelier, designer, and philanthropist Vanessa Noel. Besides the gallery, Noel owns two hotels on the island, Hotel Green and the eponymous Vanessa Noel Hotel, as well as luxury shoe boutiques on Nantucket and Manhattan's Upper East Side. The Seven Seas Gallery is located at 46 Centre St, Nantucket MA 02554, phone (508) 680-7100. It is open annually during July and August. About the Artist:
Artist's Mission Statement
When was the last time we gave eating our full attention? Most of the time, we eat on the go, we eat while working, we eat with our eyes focused on a screen. We munch away distractedly, giving little or no thought to what we're eating, let alone where it came from. It's easy to take the foods that we eat for granted, both the bounty and variety that is readily available to us and the work it takes to grow, harvest, and prepare it. As an artist, my photographs tell stories through pictures--sometimes humorous, sometimes serious—but always rooted in our universal connection to food and each other. By using everyday ingredients, arranged in novel ways, I hope to give viewers that extra push to see afresh the beauty of food.
