FCC Commissioner Mignon Clyburn Challenges Students to Excel During Visit to ADE's Learning Without Walls(TM) Program at North Clayton Middle School
ADE Chairman Hollis and Clayton County Chairman Bell Join Forces with Feds to Promote Broadband in Public Education
ATLANTA, Oct. 8 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Today, Federal Communications Commission Commissioner Mignon L. Clyburn joined The Alliance for Digital Equality(TM) (ADE) Chairman Julius H. Hollis and Clayton County Chairman Eldrin Bell for a site visit to ADE's Learning Without Walls(TM) (LWOW) broadband tutorial program at North Clayton Middle School in suburban Atlanta, Georgia.
"Just 9 weeks into her post at the FCC, Commissioner Clyburn is demonstrating that affordable broadband for every citizen is an achievable goal. With today's site visit to our Learning Without Walls(TM) Program, she is bringing her agency's message directly into the classrooms of the next generation," said Chairman Hollis. "We're extremely grateful that the commissioner was able to witness the ADE in action -- helping the Clayton County Public School District prepare its students for 21st Century technology, and beyond."
Last year Georgia's Clayton County Public Schools were the first in 40 years to lose accreditation, and after a long public battle, their accreditation was restored in May of 2009. ADE's Learning Without Walls(TM) program is aimed at improving student performance, literacy and self-esteem, while enabling families to get the career development services they need to thrive and remain competitive professionally. Online tutoring, career help, homework help, GED prep, and resume writing are just some of the free services being offered to the students and parents of the Clayton County area through the LWOW Program.
The LWOW Program is a joint initiative organized by ADE, AT&T, Qualcomm's Wireless Reach(TM) initiative,Tutor.com, SMART Technologies and Saywire to provide wireless education technology tools to students at North Clayton Middle School. As part of this program, resources for technical support, teacher training, project management, equipment and access to AT&T's wireless network have been donated by the project participants. The program will examine how 24/7 access to educational resources through mobile devices helps improve student engagement and academic achievement.
