MIAMISBURG, Ohio, Dec. 15 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Focus on Energy, Wisconsin's statewide resource for energy efficiency and renewable energy, presented NewPage Corporation's Biron mill with checks totaling $83,536 for successful completion of three projects in the mill's boilerhouse.

These projects, completed in the last half of 2009, involved turbine number three and boilers four and five. Together, the improvements made it possible to capture and reclaim heat from the steam process, then generate additional output from this steam, thereby reducing the quantity of purchased fossil fuel. The additional electricity generated in-house through these efficiency improvements is now being used to help power the mill's general operations.

Present from NewPage to accept Focus' checks were Sean Wallace, Biron mill manager, Dave Nalbach, Biron mill power & energy manager and Mike Schreier, Consolidated Water Power Company controller.

Projected annual savings from these improvements is equivalent to the energy consumed by nearly 200 average households. Additionally, green house gas emissions will be reduced by 1650 metric tons, similar to removing 330 cars from the road each year.

Jerry Aue, Focus on Energy forest products energy engineer, presented the three checks and explained, "Biron has been a shining star in the Focus program since we began in 2001. We look forward to working with the Biron energy team on additional efficiency improvement opportunities."
