NEW YORK, Sept. 8 /PRNewswire/ -- NYC is Going Orange...to fight hunger!. Orange is the color of hunger awareness. Beginning today and running through the Christmas holiday season, the Food Bank For New York City will be joined by many of the city's iconic landmarks and notable towers who are shinning a bright light on hunger -- including the Empire State Building (on September 10), the Con Edison Tower, the Time Warner Center (on September 8), the NASDAQ Tower -- corporations, cultural centers, restaurants, supermarkets, retailers, musicians, the media, in an annual citywide initiative to raise awareness and support for the approximately 1.5 million New Yorkers who rely on the Food Bank's network of programs and services.

"If there was ever a time to Go Orange, the time is now," said Dr. Lucy Cabrera, President & CEO of the Food Bank For New York City, "With approximately 4 million New Yorkers reporting having difficulty affording food for themselves and their families (up from 2 million in December 2007), and an increasing unemployment rate that has already reached almost 10 percent (more than double what it was at the start of the recession), we are calling upon all New Yorkers to Go Orange."

As the city's major supplier of food for the hunger, the Food Bank For New York City helps provide food for more than 300.000 free meals served each day by approximately 1,000 food assistance member organizations throughout the five boroughs. But the Food Bank says it cannot keep up with demand. As a result, those organizations are being forced to either offer less food to those in need, or offer food to fewer people. While the Food Bank works continuously to resolve this situation through their income support and nutrition education initiatives and through legislation, the challenge for many New Yorkers is immediate. NYC Goes Orange can potentially have a huge impact on the upcoming holiday season, but it will take an outpouring of support to meet that demand.
