Free Webinar on Safer Clinical Hand-Offs Offered by Compirion Healthcare

ELM GROVE, Wis., July 23 /PRNewswire/ -- With the number of hand-offs involved in the day-to-day operations of patient care, the potential for error due to the communication process is considered a high risk. A webinar, titled Safer Clinical Hand-Offs Now or Never: A Primary Strategy to Improving Patient Safety, is being offered free of charge to encourage standardization of hand-off communication in an effort to improve patient safety in healthcare facilities. The webinar has been developed as part of an ongoing educational program by consultants from Compirion Healthcare Solutions, a hospital process improvement firm.

Insufficient or inconsistent communication between hospital staff adversely affects the quality and continuity of care provided and contributes to adverse events and increased healthcare costs. According to the Institute of Medicine (IOM), two studies showed at least 44,000 people and perhaps as many as 98,000 die in hospitals each year because of medical errors that could have been prevented. Standardization of the hand-off communication process is necessary in promotion of patient safety. Physicians, physician extenders, nurse practitioners, nursing directors, managers, charge nurses, RNs, allied health personnel, risk management staff and performance improvement staff will find that information in this webinar will play a critical role in their effort to improve patient safety. The times, dates and registration information, along with a full list of webinars, can be found at www.compirion.com/webinars.

This webinar is presented by one of Compirion's top nurse clinicians, Clinical Consultant Joyce Jefferies, RN, MSN. Jefferies is currently wrapping up a house-wide improvement project at Duke University Hospital, where she worked with Inpatient units to improve outcomes, as well as to decrease Outpatient Length of Stay by increasing the number of patients discharged early in the day. She was also instrumental in increasing Patient Satisfaction rankings to the 90th percentile.

Jefferies has over 14 years of experience providing and directing quality, patient-centered care in hospitals. Her background covers ICU, trauma and ER nursing. Prior to joining Compirion Healthcare as a Clinical Consultant, Jefferies was Clinical Nurse Director and Interim Nursing Director of Emergency Services at the Regional Medical Center at Memphis, in Tennessee. She holds an AD in nursing from Northwest Community College, a BSN from the University of Memphis, and an MSN from Union University. She is an active member of the American Nursing Association and the Tennessee Nurses Association.

Clinical Hand-Offs Now or Never is the third in a series of free webinars being offered to help educate hospital executives, managers and clinicians in strategies for optimizing processes and procedures. Compirion's presenters are drawn from its pool of healthcare consultants, which includes registered nurses, former C-level executives, physicians, business managers and clinicians. The webinars are running through September and average about 45 minutes each, with a question-and-answer session at the end.

According to Compirion management, "We are presenting this series of webinars because we truly believe that efficiency in the hospital, especially the ED, not only saves time and money, it saves lives. It is the premise on which Compirion was founded."
