Gadzooks' March 1998 Sales Up 22.2 Percent as Comp-Store Sales Decline 7.1 Percent; Strong Young Mens, Improving Junior Sales Hurt By Slow Junior Swimwear Demand

    DALLAS, April 7 /PRNewswire/ -- Gadzooks, Inc. (Nasdaq:   GADZ), a specialty
 retailer of clothing and accessories for teenagers, today announced that sales
 for the five weeks ended April 4, 1998, were up 22.2 percent to $18,613,000
 from $15,226,000 for the five weeks ended April 5, 1997.  Comparable-store
 sales for March 1998 were down 7.1 percent from March 1997 for the 183 stores
 open for 14 full months or more.
     "Gadzooks' core apparel business met our expectations during March, with
 continued strong sales in young men's merchandise and improving sales in
 junior sportswear other than swimsuits," said Jerry Szczepanski, chairman and
 chief executive officer.  "However, junior swimwear comparable sales were down
 about 45 percent from a year ago due to a combination of later school spring
 breaks and poor weather during March.  Without the effect of lower swimsuit
 sales, our comparable-store sales for the month would have been 2.0 percent
 higher than a year ago.  We feel very positive about that performance, because
 school spring breaks for the later Easter holidays this year are coming mainly
 in April, compared with March last year.
     "The final outcome of the slump in junior swimsuit sales will probably not
 resolve itself in our stores for another couple of months, since we normally
 sell quite a few swimsuits in May," Szczepanski added.  "We remain very
 positive about the growth potential of our business and are on schedule with
 our new store expansion program for the year.  As of today, we have opened
 23 of the 26 stores in our spring schedule, with the other three due to open
 by the end of next week.  We expect to open a total of 75 new stores this
 year, which will bring our total to about 325 stores open before Christmas."
