Town of Haverstraw and GAGA Arts Center Host Various Programs in June and July

SPECIAL FLOTILLA WEEKEND HOURS: Saturday, June 6th 12 noon-8pm; Sunday, June 7th 10am-6pm. Dutch Video Art Under The Stars, Sunday, June 7th commencing at Dark

GARNERVILLE, N.Y., May 30 /PRNewswire/ -- The GAGA Arts Center -- formerly a 19th century textile mill in Rockland County -- is hosting several special art programs as part of the New York State Quadricentennial Celebration.

June 5th through June 14th the Town of Haverstraw and GAGA Arts Center celebrate Henry Hudson's discovery of the Hudson River with the opening -- at its first stop in the Hudson Valley -- of the Official 400th Anniversary traveling exhibition, Light on New Netherland, sponsored by Heineken. Light on New Netherland has been to the NYS Museum in Albany and the Museum of Connecticut History in Hartford.

Produced by the New Netherlands Institute, the exhibition traces the years the Dutch ruled in New Netherlands -- from Henry Hudson's discovery in 1609 to Peter Stuyvesant's surrender to the English in 1664. The exhibition features 26 museum-quality story boards researched by noted Dutch scholar and historian Charles T. Gehring, and includes paintings by artist Len Tantillo, the foremost painter of Dutch-period artworks. There's also a 20-minute documentary about Dutch sea exploration and the creation of New Netherland.

GAGA bridges the historical Dutch past to the Dutch present with a group exhibition called Double-Dutch. It explores Dutch contemporary life as interpreted by Dutch artists and by international artists inspired by Dutch culture. These perspectives are presented through painting, photography, sculpture, installation, performance and a video/film program. The Double-Dutch exhibition runs through July 5, 2009.

On Sunday, June 7th, GAGA's naturalist, Paul Tappenden, leads a Wild Edibles Nature Walk at GAGA from 10am-12 noon. Vangeline Theatre will present a Butoh performance inspired by Vermeer's Girl with a Pearl Earring. Visit Artists' Open Studios, walk GAGA Creekside: Nature Walk & Sculpture Trail and enjoy organic/free trade coffee, sponsored by Fresh Coffee Now, at the GAGA Coffee Bar. Later that evening at dusk, Dutch Video Art Under the Stars features a film/video presentation projected on the building facades.
