MIAMI, April 29, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Getaroom.com, a leading online discount hotel stay company, announced today its President and co-founder Bob Diener received the annual Distinguished Alumni Entrepreneur of the Year Award this past Friday from the University of Florida's Warrington College of Business Administration. The awards are sponsored by the S. Clark Butler Memorial Endowment and the UF Center for Entrepreneurship and Innovation (CEI). CEI bestows these honors each year in recognition of those who best exemplify the ideals of entrepreneurship. The winners were chosen based on their major contributions to enterprises, ethical business relationships, and inspirations to others.
Mr. Diener is a 1979 bachelor's degree graduate of the University of Florida. He continued his education at Cornell University where he earned his juris doctorate. He practiced law with the international law firm of Gibson Dunn & Crutcher before beginning his career in the travel industry in 1984. He and a partner founded the Hotel Reservations Network, now known as Hotels.com.
In 2009 Mr. Diener and his partner David Litman founded getaroom.com, a unique hotel booking site that features customer-focused campaigns such as an unpublished rates program and daily flash sales. The site offers low rates for thousands of hotels throughout the world.
"I'm honored to receive this entrepreneur award from my alma mater," said Mr. Diener. "Starting a company takes determination and a business idea that will be disruptive and hopefully profitable. My time at UF helped prepare me for the rigors of managing my own companies. Getaroom stands out because we bring new models of distribution to the marketplace that offer consumers better values that can't be found anywhere else, and this sets us apart from other more traditional booking sites. We created a new unpublished rate booking system with thousands of hotels participating and a flash sale model that offers great values that must be booked during the flash sale limited time windows. These bring new excitement to the industry, create new channels of distribution for our vendor partners and create great values for consumers."
In the fall of 2012, Mr. Diener participated in the university's Entrepreneurship-In-Residence Fellows Program which draws noted entrepreneurs, investors, and educators to the campus to teach classes and meet with students for several days. He taught Conservative Entrepreneurship, Small Business Entrepreneurship, Social Entrepreneurship and discussed unique and creative ways to distribute products.
