Getting To 33 Percent: Experts Who Forecast Big Consumer Shift To Prepaid Wireless Look Ahead To The Next Major Milestone

2009 NMRC Survey Correctly Predicted "Tipping Point" Shift to Current Level of 1 Out of 4 Wireless Customers on Prepaid; Experts Back Again to Answer the Question – What Will It Take to Get to 1 Out of 3?

WASHINGTON, July 17, 2012 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ -- Now that prepaid/no-contract subscribers account for a record one out of four wireless cell phone customers in the U.S., the experts who have been predicting this trend for three years will hold a phone-based news conference Thursday (July 19, 2012) to answer the question:  What will it take to get to 33 percent prepaid in the U.S … and how soon could that happen?

Sponsored by the independent New Millennium Research Council (NMRC), the experts will focus on such factors as:

  • The continuing rise of prepaid wireless with unlimited calling, texting and Web access;
  • The middle-class "mainstreaming" of prepaid wireless via the introduction of smartphones, such as Android handsets;
  • The emergence of what is likely to be the next big thing -- "SIM only" prepaid, also referred to as "bring your own phone" or "bring your own device."

News event speakers will be:

  • Sam Simon, senior fellow, New Millennium Research Council; and
  • Telecommunications analyst Mark Lowenstein, managing director, Mobile Ecosystem.

Simon and Lowenstein held earlier media briefings in 2010 and 2011 to call attention to data on the likelihood of major market gains for prepaid wireless. In March 2009, NMRC released a national opinion survey that forecast a major shift to prepaid that would result in up to 20 million consumers switching to no-contract wireless during the recession.

CAN'T PARTICIPATE?:  A streaming audio recording of the news event will be available on the Web as of 6 p.m. EDT on July 19, 2012 at http://www.thenmrc.org.
