LANDOVER, Md., Sept. 27 /PRNewswire/ -- Giant Food announced today that
their customers and associate's contributions to the American Heroes Fund have
surpassed the $1 million mark. Giant and its parent company, Ahold USA, have
also agreed to also match dollar-for-dollar all contributions, up to $1
The American Heroes Fund was established by Ahold USA and their operating
companies to raise funds for the victims of the September 11th tragedies and
their families. The pledge by Giant and Ahold USA to match the funds means
that over $3 million will go to the relief efforts. This is because, to date,
Giant Food has collected $1.1 million; Stop & Shop has collected $1.6 million;
Giant Food Stores has collected $470,000; Tops has collected $328,000 and BI-
LO has collected $382,000. These five retail food chains are part of the
Ahold USA operating companies.
"We are very proud of our customers and associates, who have shown great
generosity and eagerness to support the relief efforts through the American
Heroes Fund," said Dick Baird, president and CEO of Giant Food. He added,
"The response to the fund has been incredible. We've received contributions
from everyone, including school children, other businesses, our own
associates, and many others. We truly appreciate everyone's support. We want
to thank all of those who contributed for coming together and showing that the
American spirit is alive and well."
Even though the matching portion has been completed, because the recovery
efforts are expected to last another six months, Giant will continue to
collect for their American Heroes Fund through mid-October. All of the
proceeds collected at Giant and Super G stores will be donated to the American
Red Cross Disaster Relief Fund and other relief organizations aiding the
victims and families of those impacted by the September 11 tragedy.
Note: Ahold's other operating companies include: BI-LO, headquartered in
Mauldin, SC; Giant Food Stores, headquartered in Carlisle, PA; Tops Markets,
based in Williamsville, NY; Stop & Shop, headquartered in Qunicy, MA; and also
includes Peapod, the nation's e-online grocer based in Skokie, IL, as well as
US Foodservice, based in Columbia, MD.
