Gleaners' Double Your Donation Day Provides Twice the Impact

On December 21,2009 Each $1 Donation Provides 6 Meals

DETROIT, Dec. 21 /PRNewswire/ -- Today, Monday, December 21, 2009, all monetary donations made to Gleaners Community Food Bank of Southeastern Michigan (Gleaners) will be MATCHED, dollar-for-dollar by Gleaners' generous supporters. This means the $1 donation Gleaners normally turns into three nutritious meals will provide six meals on December 21st.

Hunger in Southeast Michigan

One in five children in Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties live in poverty; nearly 500,000 people live in poverty across the tri-county area.
Gleaners has seen double-digit increases in emergency food distribution each month for the last quarter of 2009 compared to the same period last year.
In November 2009 Gleaners distributed over 3.5 million pounds of food, a 24.1% increase year-to-year; representing food for nearly 44,000 households - an additional 8,535 households year-to-year and an increase of 3,450 households over October 2009.
In the first two weeks of December 2009, Gleaners has distributed nearly two million pounds of food (1,938,915/24,236 households), a 19.66% increase over the same period last year.

In Oakland County over 100,000 people live in poverty, more than the combined number of people in Livingston, Macomb and Monroe combined.

In October 2009, the need for emergency food became the #1 query to United Way's 2-1-1 call center for the first time since its inception. 10,000 new families a month in Southeast Michigan are seeking emergency food right now!
