Interest rate spread, the difference between the average rate earned on interest-bearing assets and the cost of interest-bearing liabilities, is strong as decreases in interest costs have exceeded decreases in interest income. Commenting on the period's results, Mr. Charles C. Van Vleet, the Company's President and Chief Executive Officer, said, "Results for the three months ending March 31, 2010 show that the interest expense declined to $521,000, from $720,000 in the same period in 2009. Currently it is believed that the lower rates will continue until later this year."
Mr. Van Vleet adds, "In December 2009, the Bank pre-paid a three-year FDIC premium of $368,000. Six months into the fiscal year, the company remains well capitalized as we enter a period of rate and regulatory challenges."
The Company, which is headquartered in Gouverneur, New York, is the holding company for Gouverneur Savings and Loan Association. Founded in 1892, the Bank is a federally chartered savings and loan association offering a variety of banking products and services to individuals and businesses in its primary market area in southern St. Lawrence and northern Lewis and Jefferson Counties in New York State.
