Governor Rendell Says Pennsylvania Is Strengthening Industry, Improving Workforce with New Investment 20 Grants Providing $3.7 Million in Workforce Development Opportunities

Statewide

HARRISBURG, Pa., March 29 /PRNewswire/ -- Governor Edward G. Rendell said
today Pennsylvania is making sure its working men and women have the training
and skills they need to be successful and help meet the needs of businesses.
"We need to make sure our working men and women are trained to
successfully meet the job challenges they face," the Governor said. "At the
same time, we want to make sure our businesses can tap an experienced and
skilled workforce to remain competitive in global markets."
The Governor said workers will be able to learn business, technology,
health care, transportation, manufacturing and other skills with the release
of $3.7 million from his "Job Ready PA" initiative.
"For six straight months, Pennsylvania's unemployment rate has been lower
than the nation's and the state has amassed more jobs than at any other time
in our history: 5,747,500," Governor Rendell said. "But we have more work to
do to make sure every Pennsylvanian shares in our improving economy.
"Our new Job Ready PA investment will go a long way to helping our
hardworking men and women learn the skills employers are looking for."
This latest round of strategic investments provides $2.7 million for
workforce training in key industries and $924,088 for the development of
industry partnerships, where employers, workers and workers' representatives
from vital industries cooperate to improve their collective competitive
position in the marketplace. More than $3.9 million private-sector matching
funds boost the total investment to $7.6 million.
Industry partnerships can identify specific training needs and skill gaps,
help connect young people to careers, help educational and training
institutions arrange curriculum to meet industry demand, address worker
recruitment and retention, develop career ladders within companies, highlight
best practices, and promote communication among companies.
"We will continue to make investments in our people and our businesses,"
 Governor Rendell said.
