Griswold Home Care Awards $1,000 Scholarship to Oklahoma Student. Griswold Home Care, a non-medical in-home care company that refers caregivers who provide in-home support for older adults, presented a $1,000 scholarship to Hayden Sparks, a Oklahoma area student.
PHILADELPHIA, July 22, 2014 /PRNewswire-iReach/ -- In the fall of 2013, Griswold Home Care created a bi-annual scholarship for students pursuing higher education. The first-ever recipient of this scholarship, Hayden Sparks, was announced as the winner of the scholarship contest on July 9th, 2014.
Applicants were asked to describe their experiences caring for others, and what challenges and rewards came with the experience. In addition, Griswold Home Care queried applicants about the toughest struggle they've had to overcome and how they would use the $1,000 scholarship, if awarded to them, to impact the lives of others.
Out of 1,600 applicants, it was Hayden Sparks, a recent graduate from Broken Arrow High School in Broken Arrow, OK, who impressed the panel with his essay.
Hayden is currently battling T-Cell Non-Hodgkin's Lymphoma. While he has "technically not completely overcome this obstacle," Hayden has "come a long way and made a lot of progress." He credits a positive attitude as "one of the most important factors in accomplishing a task. This will be my greatest accomplishment and is more than just a goal to me, but a checkpoint in my life. This achievement will give me a different outlook on the world, and will give me faith that I can accomplish anything I am faced with in my life."
When Griswold Home Care asked Hayden how he would use the $1,000 scholarship, he mentioned his plans to become a pediatric oncologist. As he looks to the future, Hayden feels that his ability to "relate to the patients and understand most of what they are going through" will be invaluable to those who will be in his care following his college studies. Hayden also mentioned how his "personal experience with some of the medicines that cause certain side effects" will be helpful to his future patients. Hayden suggested that this scholarship would help him work towards making his patients "smile and laugh, to keep their minds off of some of the things going on in their lives."
Griswold Home Care wishes Hayden the best of luck in his studies at the University of Oklahoma and looks forward to seeing the great things this young man will accomplish post-graduation.
