COLUMBIA, Md., May 11 /PRNewswire/ -- Gunnar Eklund, Icelandair's General Manager-The Americas, has been selected as "Airline Professional of the Year" by the Baltimore chapter of The Academy of Travel, Tourism and Hospitality. An engraved silver plate commemorating the event was presented during the 6th Annual Academy Awards dinner on Tuesday, May 2, 2000. "It is an honor to receive this award, which represents not only an acknowledgement of my efforts but also primarily the accomplishments of the many dedicated staff members who work with me in Icelandair," Eklund commented. "BWI is now the biggest North American gateway for our company in terms of local sales in the United States and Canada," he added. Eklund, who was unable to attend the award ceremonies due to meetings in Europe, said the timing is auspicious, as Icelandair is celebrating 10 years of consecutive service from Baltimore/Washington International airport this year. Eklund joined Icelandair in 1990 with an assignment to establish a sales foothold at BWI and was named Sales Manager in 1995 and General Manager-The Americas in July 1996. His previous experience includes 18 years with Scandinavian Airlines Systems (SAS) in Scandinavia, Africa, Middle East, Far East and in the US. Icelandair-The Americas is headquartered at 5950 Symphony Woods Road, Columbia, Maryland.
