WASHINGTON, Aug. 4, 2015 /PRNewswire/ -- Horatio Alger Association of Distinguished Americans, Inc., a nonprofit educational organization honoring the achievements of outstanding individuals and encouraging youth to pursue their dreams through higher education, today announced that applications are open for its 2016 scholarship programs. With the goal of awarding more than $10 million in undergraduate and graduate scholarships in 2016, the Association operates one of the largest privately funded, need-based scholarship programs in the country.  Applications for national- and state-level scholarships are now being accepted through October 25, 2015.

Through its robust scholarship programs, Horatio Alger Association supports high school students of exceptional character who demonstrate a commitment to continuing their education and serving their communities, despite facing great adversity. Since 1984, more than 22,000 students, from all 50 states, the District of Columbia and Puerto Rico, have received more than $110 million in scholarships for undergraduate and graduate studies.  Horatio Alger Association is currently administering the Investing in America's Future Campaign to achieve $250 million in its endowment fund.  Attainment of this goal will enable the Association to increase the value of its scholarships and to endow them in perpetuity.  Currently, Horatio Alger National Scholarships are valued at $22,000 and State Scholarships are predominantly valued at $7,000.

"Through the Horatio Alger Association scholarship programs, we continue to empower motivated, young students who are the future leaders of our country," said Tony Novelly, president and CEO, Horatio Alger Association.
