Hormel Foods Announces Product Recall

Oct 30, 1998, 00:00 ET from Hormel Foods

AUSTIN, Minn., Oct. 30 /PRNewswire/ -- Hormel Foods Corporation
(NYSE: HRL) today announced it is voluntarily undertaking a nationwide recall
of all packages of Quick Meal(R) frozen hamburgers, including cheeseburgers
and bacon cheeseburgers, because they have the potential to be contaminated
with Listeria monocytogenes. This is an organism which can cause serious and
sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and
others with weakened immune systems. Healthy individuals may suffer short-term
symptoms such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal
pain and diarrhea. Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths
 among pregnant women.
A smaller amount involving only Quick Meal(R) cheeseburger sandwiches was
recalled last week. Hormel Foods said the decision to expand the recall was
strictly a safety precaution made to ensure complete public confidence in the
 integrity of the affected products.
The recalled sandwiches include hamburgers, cheeseburgers and bacon
cheeseburgers under the Quick Meal(R) brand. No known illnesses have been
associated with these products. Consumers who purchased these Quick Meal(R)
sandwiches are urged to return them to the place of purchase to receive a full
refund. Consumers who have questions may contact the company toll-free between
 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at 877-446-7635.
The potential for contamination was noted after routine testing by an
institution receiving the product revealed the presence of Listeria
monocytogenes in a cheeseburger package. Production of the product has been
suspended while the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and Hormel Foods
continue to investigate the source of the problem.
"We are moving voluntarily to withdraw these products from the marketplace
because of our long-standing commitment to both retail customers and consumers
who know our reputation for producing and selling only products of the highest
quality," said V. Allan Krejci, director of public relations for Hormel Foods.
"It is vitally important to us that none of our customers or consumers ever
have any reason to doubt the quality and wholesomeness of our products. When a
problem of this nature develops, we are committed to our best efforts to
 resolve it quickly and satisfactorily."
